YOUR MEMBERSHIP MATTERS!

Our mission is to promote all forms of Nordic skiing as a healthy activity for all ages and abilities. Among our core activities are maintaining and grooming over 140 kilometers of ski trails for recreation and touring, as well as performance skiing and racing.
Serving Anchorage's Nordic ski community requires the year-round commitment of a small but dedicated staff, hundreds of hard-working volunteers, and a fleet of specialized heavy equipment. More importantly, the generous support of our members and donors is what
makes all of this possible.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
2013

KINCAID

Matt went out early this morning with the Pisten Bully and groomed the Snow Making Loop and the Stadium with clean skate lanes and fresh tracks.  All other trails are AS IS due to the vulnerable base.

HILLSIDE

Tom was out late yesterday and said there was a little change for the better.  The temperature was below freezing and icy so he was able to break the surface with the snow machine and the cutter to scratch up the skate lanes.  He mentioned that due to high winds, there were a ton of spruce needles and birch branches littering the trails.  He made multiple passes throughout the park and said it looked "pretty dirty."  He spent some time trying to repair some holes on the Gasline from a lot of foot traffic and ruts from bicycles.  His final words were "Kincaid is the place to ski";).

CHUGIAK/EAGLE RIVER

Bill said that at 6:00 a.m. it was 38 degrees and breezy in Chugiak.  Depending on wind exposure, they've lost about 25% of what little base depth they had and the forecast is for another day or so of this warm weather.  Cutting up the surface (grooming) now would increase surface area promoting all the things we would like to slow down; sublimation, heat transfer, melting and vaporization.

If it was March or later, he'd be grinding it up everyday.  On January first, with no guaranties of snow, he's tending to be a bit more conservative...trading a couple of days skiing now for what could be a couple of weeks of spring skiing.

He's out walking the trail system at Beach Lake this morning assessing the situation further.

"UWAX is Back" Kincaid weather hotline is back online 248-UWAX (248-8929) will give Time, Temp in F, Wind direction, wind speed & humidity. Listen closely, - Hal, the automated voice, is a bit hard to understand. Huge thank you to Karl Volz for making that happen.
